Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of diseases which cause damage to the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss.  If left untreated, it can

result in permanent optic nerve damage and cause blindness.  Early detection and treatment of glaucoma can protect the

eyes against this.

Several studies have shown that increased eye pressure is a risk factor for glaucoma.  Increased eye pressure occurs when the fluid within the eye cannot easily flow out.  The increased pressure will damage the optic nerve and cause a gradual loss of peripheral vision.

Because glaucoma is painless and early on, there is very mild loss of vision, it is important to have a regular comprehensive exam by your eye doctor, especially if you have risk factors for glaucoma.  Risk factors for glaucoma include family history, being over the age of 45, and being African-American.

Your doctor can determine if you have glaucoma or if you are at risk of developing it by examining your eyes and performing various tests to check for any signs of damage from glaucoma.  Although any damage which has occurred to the optic nerve cannot be reversed, there are several treatment options to help reduce the progression of the disease.  This includes eye drops, laser treatment, and surgery.

During your exam, if Dr. Kalyani thinks you have glaucoma or are at risk of developing it, he will discuss with you in detail any further testing which needs to be performed as well as treatment options.
