A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye.  The lens in our eye helps to focus light on the retina, which then changes the light into nerve signals which are sent to the brain.  When the lens becomes cloudy, light is unable to readily pass through to the retina, causing blurred or dimmed vision.  Most cataracts are related to aging.  Some cataracts can be caused by trauma or other medical conditions, such as diabetes.

Symptoms associated with cataracts include blurry, cloudy vision; glare and halos around lights; colors seem faded; and poor night vision.  Your ophthalmologist can detect cataracts with a comprehensive eye exam.

Cataracts cannot be treated with medications, but a cataract only needs to be removed when the impaired vision interferes with daily activities, such as driving, reading, or watching television.  In this case, your eye doctor may recommend cataract surgery.  During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL).  Cataract surgery is an out-patient surgery and most of the time can be performed in under 30 minutes.
